How to Track Learning Progress: Separate Plans from Results

Watching a lesson, solving a problem and finishing something independently are different kinds of progress. Naming the difference helps you decide whether to review, practice or move on.

Choose a clear learning direction

Create a branch for a direction such as “Python data processing” or “spoken English.” You do not need a separate branch for every lesson. Put chapter names and exercise topics in record titles or details instead.

Keep “Finish chapter three this week” as a separate goal. After you actually read, practice or produce something, add a record. Goal status is maintained manually; a plan is not evidence of completed work.

Keep outputs and difficulties together

A useful learning progress record includes a task, an actual output, an unresolved problem and the date. Study time can describe effort, but does not establish mastery by itself.

Synthetic example · three records in one branch
October 8
Read the CSV lesson and ran its example. Could not yet write it independently.
October 9
Loaded practice data independently. Missing values affected the result; recorded the error and investigation.
October 10
Handled missing values and completed a small report. Date-format edge cases remain.

These entries do not need to become “I have learned Python.” They preserve a progression from following an example to independent work, while keeping the limits visible.

When an attempt fails, note the input, what you tried and the current result. Your next session can continue the investigation instead of repeating the first step.

Review the learning timeline

Add the records manually in Growth Cosmos and check the dates and branch before saving. Revisit the learning branch for context and the timeline for the order of your attempts.

During a weekly review, ask: What output can I inspect? Which difficulty keeps returning? What small task can I finish next? Then update a separate manual goal. The timeline displays your records; it does not automatically assess knowledge or proficiency.

Use the daily growth journal template for a shorter entry, or the skill branch guide when you have several learning directions.
